Cardboard boxes
Pizza boxes, direct mail boxes, moving boxes, shoe boxes.

Boxboard
Cereal boxes, tissue boxes, egg cartons, rolls from toilet paper and paper towel.

Cartons
Soup, broth, egg and sauce cartons.

Paper
Any colour, including flour bags, prescription bags, paper produce bags.
Notepads, white or coloured loose paper, file folders, other printed materials.

More materials will be accepted at all recycling collection points – curbside and depot. These materials include glass containers (where they are not currently accepted), foam packaging, flexible plastic packaging, empty aerosol containers, laminated paper and plastic packaging.
As of October 1, 2026, the provincial recycling system for packaging and paper products in Alberta will be managed by a not-for-profit organization called Circular Materials. This change is part of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation passed by the Government of Alberta in 2022 that shifts the financial and operational responsibility of recycling programs from municipalities to “producers” – businesses in Alberta that produce and supply packaging and paper materials to consumers.

There is no cost to residents for recycling services for packaging and paper products. In 2022, the Government of Alberta passed regulation which introduced extended producer responsibility (EPR) for single-use packaging and paper products (PPP) in the province. EPR is a policy approach that shifts the financial and operational responsibility of recycling programs from municipalities to “producers” – businesses in Alberta that produce and supply packaging and paper materials to consumers. This new EPR framework means municipalities and taxpayers will no longer pay for recycling services as this cost will now be paid by producers.
Fill your recycling cart with recyclable paper and product packaging materials. Your items can be placed loose and empty inside the cart and do not need to be bundled or sorted. Do not use black garbage bags in your cart. Some examples of items that can be recycled include:

We recognize that recycling carts and household collection service is a change for residents, but we encourage you to use your recycling cart for three months to best evaluate your household recycling needs.
Industry research on recycling program transitions shows that three months is the average time for households to assess recycling needs under EPR – particularly given the expanded list of materials that can be recycled.

If after three months you wish to have your cart removed and use depot drop off services only, please contact your Collection Contractor to request your cart be removed.

During snowy weather, place your recycling cart on a flat, shoveled surface clear of any snow and ice. Please avoid placing it on the street or on top of snowbanks. Make sure it’s at least 3 feet (1 metre) away from snowbanks, parked cars, and other obstacles so collection crews can easily access it. Always keep the lid closed to keep snow out and place your cart at the curb with wheels towards your home.
