Program overview

Alberta has a new extended producer responsibility framework for packaging and paper. A new regulation came into effect on November 30, 2022, with the transition to EPR launching in April 2025.

Transition timeline

The anticipated timeline for Alberta’s transition to full extended producer responsibility is shown below.

May 31, 2024

2022 and 2023 data due in the WeRecycle Portal.

June 30, 2024

Alberta 2022 and 2023 data due to ARMA. Circular Materials will support producers in submitting this data on the ARMA portal.

April 1, 2025

The new system is operational for registered communities that had existing service as of November 30, 2022.

October 1, 2026

The new system is operational for registered communities that did not have existing service as of November 30, 2022.

FAQs

  1. Register in the ARMA Connect Portal by March 1, 2024.
  2. Sign up with Circular Materials as your producer responsibility organization. Contact us to request an agreement.

To be exempt under the Regulation, you must be:

  1. A charitable organization as defined in the Charitable Fund-raising Act; or
  2. Any other producer with annual gross revenue in Alberta less than the threshold specified by the bylaws; or
  3. Any other producer with annual gross revenue in Alberta greater than the revenue threshold specified by the bylaws but who supply less than the designated material threshold amounts specified by the bylaws.
