Packaging and paper extended producer responsibility in Alberta.

Program overview

Alberta has a new extended producer responsibility framework for packaging and paper. A new regulation came into effect on November 30, 2022, and the Province and the Alberta Recycling Management Authority are in the process of establishing regulatory oversight and bylaws for the program leading up to its launch in April 2025. 

Transition timeline

The anticipated timeline for Alberta’s transition to full extended producer responsibility is shown below.

October 3, 2022

Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulation was created.

November 30, 2022

The EPR Regulation came into force.

2023

Bylaws are developed and finalized, and the community and producer registration process launches.

April 1, 2024

Producers provide verification of their collection and management plans. 

April 1, 2025

The new system is operational for registered communities that had existing service as of November 30, 2022. 

October 1, 2026

The new system is operational for registered communities that did not have existing service as of November 30, 2022.
