New recycling curbside collection coming to Greenstone

Starting November 23, Greenstone will move to an enhanced recycling program that includes curbside recycling collection. Recycling bins will be delivered starting October 17.

The new service will make recycling easier and more convenient by allowing residents to recycle accepted materials from home through regular curbside collection.

Residents will be able to recycle a range of accepted materials through the new program, including paper and fibres, plastic containers and packaging, glass containers, metal packaging and more.

Greenstone’s recycling program is managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization and the administrator of Ontario’s common collection system, committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system across the province.

    FAQs

Who are Circular Materials and why is curbside recycling being introduced in my community?
    • Circular Materials is a not-for-profit producer responsibility organization (PRO) that is supporting producers in meeting their extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations under Ontario’s Blue Box Regulation. Circular Materials is also the administrator of the common collection system on behalf of all PROs operating in Ontario, responsible for operating Ontario’s new recycling system for packaging and paper products.
    • Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is a framework where producers – the companies that supply packaging and paper products to consumers – are 100% financially and operationally responsible for the recycling and end-of-life management of their materials. Producers include retailers, brand owners and consumer goods companies that Ontarians interact with every day. Under Ontario’s EPR framework, blue box recycling is 100% funded and operated by producers, taking the costs and operational responsibility for blue box recycling away from taxpayers and municipalities. This means that residents will no longer be paying for recycling services as this cost will be borne by producers.

What are the benefits of recycling?
    • Saves resources: Recycling helps conserve natural resources and allows materials to be used again in new products and packaging.
    • Saves water: Recycling one tonne of paper can save up to 26,000 litres of water. That’s enough to fill 173 standard bathtubs.
    • Saves trees: Recycling just one tonne of paper can save up to 17 trees.
    • Circularity: Recycling ensures materials can be used again in new products and packaging.

When will curbside recycling collection begin, and when will I receive my container?
    • Curbside recycling collection will begin: November 23
    • Recycling containers will be delivered to households beginning October 17.

What happens to my recyclables after they are collected?
    • Recyclable materials are collected and transported to facilities where they are sorted and prepared for recycling.
    • Recycled materials can then be used to make new products and packaging, giving materials a second life.
