Recycling Cart Request Form and FAQ

Dufferin County is undergoing changes to its recycling program. This page provides further information on the changes underway, including how to request and determine the appropriately sized recycling cart to meet your household recycling needs.

Starting March 2026, each household in Dufferin County will receive a standard-issued 360-litre wheeled, lidded recycling cart designed to accommodate a broad range of accepted materials on a weekly basis.

If a 360-litre size cart does not meet your recycling needs, you can pre-order a smaller 240-litre recycling cart by January 15, 2026.

For residents who want to receive the standard issued 360-litre cart, and do not require a change, no further action is required. You will receive your cart delivery beginning March 1, 2026.

To ensure residents choose a recycling cart that meets their recycling needs, we recommend reviewing the below considerations.

  • Expanded List of Accepted Materials: With advancements in the recycling system, residents will now be able to recycle more materials such as hot and cold beverage cups, black plastic containers, frozen juice containers, ice cream tubs, deodorant and toothpaste tubes. This expanded list of materials will increase the volume of recyclable materials generated and collected from households.
  • All Materials Must be Inside the Cart for Collection: All materials must be placed inside the recycling cart, with the lid fully closed to be ready for collection pick up. Please note that material placed outside the recycling cart will not be collected.
  • Collection Schedule: Recycling collection service in Dufferin County will remain weekly.

If, based on the above considerations, you would like to proceed with a pre-order for a smaller 240-litre cart, please complete the Recycling Cart Request Form by January 15, 2026.

There are no changes to your weekly recycling collection schedule or frequency and your current recycling pickup day will remain the same.

Blue box materials, particularly cardboard, must be broken down and flattened to support using the space efficiently. We recommend using your 360-litre recycling cart for at least three weekly collection pickups to understand your recycling needs before requesting an additional cart.

If another recycling cart is deemed necessary, a second 360-litre cart will be provided at no cost. A request form for a second cart will be shared when it becomes available.

Please note, this only applies to households with a standard 360-litre recycling cart. A second cart will not be provided for households who pre-ordered the smaller 240-litre size recycling cart.

Residents are asked to use their current blue boxes until March 31, 2026. Starting April 1, 2026, residents will be required to use their new recycling cart. Residents can choose to re-purpose their old boxes, such as using them as storage containers.

A full list of materials that can be recycled can be found here. Starting January 1, 2026, you will be able to recycle the same materials no matter where you are in the province. The list of materials accepted for recycling has also expanded to include additional items such as hot and cold beverage cups, black plastic containers, frozen juice containers, ice cream tubs, deodorant and toothpaste tubes.

Anyone experiencing a permanent or temporary physical disability that restricts their ability to set out their recycling cart at the curbside may be eligible for assisted collection service. Please note, a physician’s note is required to apply for this assisted service. Please visit our website to access the Special Accommodation Recycling Collection Form.

GFL will continue to be the collection contractor for Dufferin County.

The RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag on your cart helps ensure your recycling cart is correctly registered to your address. This technology helps prevent lost or misplaced carts and supports efficient service delivery. The tag does not collect any personal information or track your activities.
