Thank you to those who participated in Circular Materials\u2019 consultation and engagement on the Readiness Report for Packaging, Paper Products, and Packaging-like products (PPP) in Nova Scotia. \u00a0<\/p>

All feedback submissions are being reviewed and considered as we finalized the Readiness Report to ensure it meets all stakeholder interests. The Readiness Report was submitted to Divert NS in October 2024. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

As planning is underway to prepare for the transition to an extended producer responsibility framework on December 1, 2025, Circular Materials will be continuing its engagement process with the Mi\u2019kmaq First Nations along with conducting discovery meetings on promotion and education with the Regional Waste Regions and municipalities. \u00a0<\/p>

\n \n Why is Circular Materials consulting on its Nova Scotia Readiness Report for Packaging, Paper Products and Packaging-Like Products (PPP)?<\/span> <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n\n

Circular Materials is a national not-for-profit producer responsibility organization (PRO) that supports producers with meeting their obligations under extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations across Canada.<\/p>

As the designated PRO for PPP in Nova Scotia, Circular Materials has developed a Nova Scotia Readiness Report on behalf of its producers who are obligated by the\u00a0Environmental Act<\/em><\/a>.\u202f<\/p>

To ensure the Readiness Report represents the interests of First Nations and stakeholders, we will be engaging producers, First Nations, municipal representatives and service providers in a comprehensive and meaningful consultation process. Following the consultation period, the Readiness Report was finalized and submitted to Divert Nova Scotia for review in October 2024.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

\n \n Who does the Readiness Report impact? <\/span> <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n\n

To be exempt under\u00a0the Regulation<\/a>, you must be:<\/p>

  1. a society incorporated under the\u00a0Societies Act<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0except a society incorporated for educational purposes such as a university or college within Nova Scotia; or<\/li>
  2. a small producer with a gross annual revenue of less than $1 million a year or that supplies less than 1 tonne of designated material in a year.<\/li><\/ol><\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    \n \n What is the definition of a producer in Nova Scotia?<\/span> <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n\n

    The Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging, Paper Products, and Packaging-Like Products Regulations under the\u00a0Environment Act<\/em>\u00a0provides a definition of \u201cproducer determination\u201d.<\/p>

    The hierarchy places responsibility on:\u202f\u202f<\/p>

    1. The brand holder who is resident in Canada whose packaging and\/or paper is supplied to Nova Scotia consumers as the first person who would be responsible.\u202f\u202f<\/li>
    2. Where no brand holder is resident in Canada, then the importer who supplied the packaging and\/or paper who is resident in Nova Scotia.\u202f<\/li>
    3. Where no importer is resident in Nova Scotia, then the retailer who supplied Blue Box materials to consumers in Nova Scotia.\u202f<\/li><\/ol><\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
